Waterloo Medal for sale to Private Thomas Goninge, 1st Battalion, 52nd Regiment of Foot. The Waterloo Medal fitted with silver clip, straight-bar suspension, and ribbon.
Condition report: The Waterloo Medal with good definition and clear impressed naming to the rim. The obverse with a couple of edge knocks, the reverse clean. The Waterloo Medal with a pleasant darkened patina; an older silk ribbon attached.
Note: The 52nd Regiment of Foot are most notable for charging Napoleon's Imperial Guard, forcing them to retreat. This is one of the many accounts of the 52nd at the Battle of Waterloo: Seeing the 52nd advancing, The Duke of Wellington reputedly ordered;
"Go on, Colborne, they won't stand!"
The 52nd then advanced diagonally across the field, followed by a bayonet charge. The French were forced into full retreat.
Having pursued the French down the escarpment of Mont St Jean, the 52nd crossed the valley floor (which at the start of the battle had separated the armies) and on the other side, attacked a square of Napoleon's elite, Imperial Old Guard, which had formed up to the British right of the inn La Belle Alliance. Although the Old Guard usually stood their ground, the attack by the 52nd was so ferocious, they were forced to retreat.
Additional note: Private Thomas Goninge is confirmed on the Roll.
